3 Steps for Winterizing Your Community Pool

3 Steps for Winterizing Your Community Pool

Fall is here! With it comes crisp air and a pleasant chill that means it's time to close your outdoor pool for the season. If you're unsure of where to start, here are a few steps that are important for preserving your pool area so it will be ready come spring.

Cleaning the Accessories

Disconnect filters, heaters, and drains and wash, then blow them out to prevent freezing. Plug return pipes in above-ground pools and skimmers and loosen any fittings to avoid freeze cracks. Use duct tape to cover any exposed pipes and inflate an air pillow for above-ground pools. Open the air relief valve if your swimming pool has one.

Monitor the Water

Ensure the water pH, calcium hardness, and total alkalinity are well balanced. It's essential to do this to protect the pool's surface from etching and staining. Add a winterizing chemical kit to the water to ensure the water remains blue for the next season. Also, be sure to keep up with the manufacturer's instructions for the best results. Avoid using floaters that contain chlorine or bromine to prevent them from sticking against the wall. Lower the water level below the mouth of the skimmers.

Seal and Secure

Use a Gizmo to seal the line in skimmers and put Teflon tape on the threads to ease removal in the spring. Ensure you adequately cover the pool to protect it from debris. The type of cover you use will depend on several factors.
